This intricate design behind the altar covers nearly the entire back wall of the Chancel. It is composed of 850 pieces of hand-carved Appalachian Oak, and measures 20 by 27 feet.
Occupying the highest niche is the carved representation of St. John the Evangelist, Patron of the Cathedral, with St. Peter & St. Paul on either side. Below are statues of three other Evangelists - St. Matthew, St. Mark, & St. Luke, and an arrangement of 32 smaller carvings of angels.
