The rectory office had a thought-provoking call about the need for assistance to those outside the digital world. What happens when low income people, with no computers/smartphones, need to find out how to contact someone - a hospital, a repair person, a doctor, or basically, any resource? Those left in this information vacuum tend to be elderly, the poorest of the poor, or disabled, and are never likely to join the digital world. Phone books are now a rarity, and not as inclusive as in decades past. Dialing Information (411) generates a charge, and requires knowing exactly who/what you are looking for, & thus is not helpful for all problems. It was eye-opening to realize how completely dependent we have become on online searches for information. While there is help available, information on how to GET to that help is scarce for these people; most assistance information available only covers basic needs, not more complex information searches. What can we do to bridge this communication problem? If we identify, reach out, and are aware of those in this information vacuum, and provide them with ways to access needed assistance information, that would help. The City of Cleveland has a Department of Aging, (216-664-2833), yet their programs are mainly accessible online. The county-wide The Western Reserve Office on Aging has a help line available at 216-621-0303, or intake line: 216-539-9240 x4100. They also publish a resource directory, which they can send by mail. For a wider range of issues and information, The United Way’s “first call for help” - (211) connects 24/7 to a staff of specialists who can direct people to a great variety of services. They keep a database of resources to suit many needs. For immediate, basic needs here in the downtown/inner city area, you can direct people to the Diocesan St Vincent de Paul help line: 216-696-6525 x3150, for a wide variety of needs: food, utility assistance, rent assistance. Catholic Charities (locally through the Bishop Cosgrove Center) also assists with many of these same needs as well as clothing and identification help.
