A DVD History of the Cathedral

View an excerpt from the DVD

The Evangelization Ministry of the Cathedral has produced a video documentary of the history and role the Cathedral has played for nearly 160 years in Cleveland. The DVD highlights the beautiful cathedral building in which we celebrate the Eucharist and the wonderful Body of Christ at work within this building - our Cathedral parish, everybody’s church. The DVD of this production will be available after the weekend Masses, at the Rectory Office, or by using the link below.

The Cathedral is the "Mother Church" and the seat of the presiding Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland.  It is the centerpiece of worship for the diocesan family of believers, hosting the major celebrations of faith and life.  We call the Cathedral "Everybody's Church" since it is the church of the people and it is the place where everybody: Bishop, clergy, and people make the Church manifest.

The Diocese of Cleveland was established in 1847 and our first bishop, Amadeus Rappe, laid the cornerstone for our Cathedral at Erie Street (East 9th) and Superior Avenue in 1848.  In a small chapel on Christmas, 1849, the first Mass was celebrated on this location.  Anticipating the centenary of the Diocese, Archbishop Edward F. Hoban undertook the expansion and renovation of the Cathedral; it was rededicated on September 6, 1948.

To commemorate the 60th Anniversary of that re-dedication, and the 160th anniversary of the first celebration of Mass at this location, we have established an anniversary year 2008-2009.  This video documentary, in beautiful detail, captures and recounts these historic events and the life of the Cathedral today, providing a magnificent archive for the generations to come.

The Cathedral today is a vibrant and enthusiastic institution, community, and ministry at the heart of Northeast Ohio's religious, civic, financial, and social crossroads.  May God bless all those who have provided for this inspiring house of worship and for this outstanding documentary to the presence if God's saving love at the heart of the city - The Cathedral: Everybody's Church!
